thebigword named ‘Business of the Year’

Leeds-based company thebigword has been named ‘Business of the Year’ in the City of Leeds Business Awards.

The company provides technology, interpreting and translation to private and public sector clients across the globe, including 80 of the world’s top 100 brands.

The ‘Business of the Year’ accolade is the latest in a string of awards picked up by the company, and comes off the back of a strong year which has seen record sales of £48 million.

Larry Gould, founder and chief executive officer, said: “This award means a lot to us. From humble beginnings and one desk 30 years ago, thebigword has grown into a successful international business with 15 offices around the world.

“As well as contributing to the local economy, we have helped establish the UK as a centre of excellence for global communications.

“Diversity has been key to our success. It cascades throughout the business.

“And we never get complacent. In fact, we will soon be revealing a number of exciting and innovative initiatives to ensure we stay ahead of the game and keep growing.”

Frank McKenna, chief executive of event organisers Downtown, said: “The calibre of the winners was astounding and show what a thriving business community we have in Leeds.

“We were particularly pleased to recognise thebigword for the huge contribution it has made to the area and the entrepreneurial spark, drive and vision demonstrated over the years.”

Roger Marsh, Chair of the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) who presented the award commented: “Many congratulations to thebigword on this well-deserved award. The LEP is all about enabling our region’s ambitious businesses to reach their growth potential so I was honoured to be part of this event celebrating their success.

“It was particularly pleasing to recognise Larry Gould who, as a LEP export ambassador, is helping to push the Leeds City Region forward in key international markets. Well done to Larry and his team, and to all of the winners and nominees who are a great testament to our region’s outstanding business success.”

The City of Leeds Business Awards, organised by Downtown in Business, celebrates successful businesses and entrepreneurs who have helped grow the Leeds economy and played a role in making it a fantastic place to work. Leeds now consistently ranks in the top three centres outside London for major industrial centres such as manufacturing and environment technology. The Leeds City Region boasts a £60billion economy and generates five per cent of the UK’s gross value added (GVA).
