Reclaiming the Word: ‘Sales’ – the Secret of Commercial Success

On September 4th 2019, global language service provider, thebigword, was ranked as the number 1 interpretation company in Europe, and number 4 worldwide, according to Nimdzi, an international language industry research agency.

In the same month, Rachel Ali, Business Development Director at thebigword was awarded ‘Salesperson of the Year’ at the ATC Language Industry Awards. At these awards, three people from thebigword were nominated and two awards were won.

Commercial success is truly in the company’s DNA. Larry Gould, Founder and Chairman of the company, began his career as a retail apprentice in the British department store Debenhams and tells us that rigorous and regular training is a key component to commercial success.

Mr Gould said: “The training I received in the early years of my career made me excel as a salesman, it required hard work, but the reward was worth it.

“In my own business I have always ensured that our sales teams receive the very best training. In the early 1990s I was awarded a national training award and in 2011, I was proud to receive an honorary doctorate from Leeds Beckett University for the work thebigword did working with the University in developing an online training program.”

In line with the company’s history of training, thebigword has recently launched a ‘Global Sales Excellence and Certification Program’, designed to support the global commercial team to become more in-depth subject matter experts by developing their knowledge of thebigword’s service and product offering.

The program includes a combination of online and in-person training, self-guided study materials, as well as written and oral assignments. The curriculum comprises multiple modules covering a range of topics and exercises related to thebigword products, services, and value propositions.

Josh Gould, Global CEO at thebigword is enthusiastic about the company’s Sales Excellence Program: “Across our global client base, we are seeing two trends. Firstly, global companies are seeking to accelerate their Digital Transformation strategies and journey. Language services and technologies are critical in this regard.

“Secondly, these companies are seeking a global partner, who can truly lead them – and guide them – on this journey to capitalize quickly on the opportunities and transform their businesses. Client problem statements are becoming more complex, solutions more sophisticated, and the skill sets required more nuanced.”

The new Global Sales Excellence program is ensuring that thebigword’s commercial team are the most knowledgeable in the industry to be the guides that are clients are seeking. This ensures that clients and prospective clients are supported to choose the most suitable and cost-effective service for their requirements.

In order to achieve this, thebigword provide customized training coupled with real-world pilot testing that takes the “snore” out of learning and development.

Mr Josh Gould added: “It is important to us to continue putting our clients at the heart of everything that we do and supporting our sales team to build superior client relationships and become trusted advisors in order to lead our customers on the way to devising creative solutions to their problems. Our world-leading Sales Excellence & Certification Program will help us to achieve this goal.”

Rachel Ali, Business Development Director, said: “The training we receive at thebigword is excellent and we are encouraged to give time to learning.

“Being a trusted advisor to my clients enables me to develop long lasting strong relationships and the foundation for this is knowledge of our industry-leading solutions. It is this drive to be irresistible that leads us to our ongoing success.”
